I don't live where there are critters to be cautious of - thanfully so. My sister-in-law, however, lives in Scottsdale, AZ - and when she first moved out there, scorpions were a caution. And tarantulas. And snakes. *shiver* I keep telling her she needs to move back to Illinois.
I remember when I was pregnant with Nicole I was hiking uphill in Wimberly, TX. I stepped over a sleeping rattlesnake who had apparently just eaten. Since there was only one way down I immediately stepped back over the rattlesnake and ran all the way down the hill screaming "rattlesnake, rattlesnake..." LOL.
It was very sluggish because it was a hot summer afternoon and I did see a big "bulge" and I guess it wasn't hungry... I was lucky!
What a shame these beautiful fellow animals are given such a harsh judgment, prejudiced and biased, all because they have a system of hunting and defense - as all of us do. If you step on one accidentally and you're invenomated, it's a natural reaction of the snake - there were times when it would've been very difficult to step on one since humans didn't always encroach so greedily into other animals territories. We all defend what we work for, what we need. They were here first, let's find a way to cooperate, share what we have here on earth. Before we don't.

When I step out of the truck at the ranch I always try to remember to look down before I step out. Great sign and great warning.

The neighbor told me there were snakes in the garden and it kept me looking at twigs and sticks for months.
Not one snake in five years...
Interesting how one snake photo warning sign generates the most comments, lol...
I haven't seen a snake in a long time and hope my good fortune continues!
